Katherine Lynch's Working Girls is a three-part Irish comedy television programme broadcast on RTÉ Two in January 2008. It stars comedienne Katherine Lynch, who also co-wrote and co-produced the series alongside Warren Meyler. It was the pair's first television series.

Lynch described it as a "hybrid" series, featuring both comedy sketches and interaction with the general public.[1] Darragh McManus of the Irish Independent wrote that it was "in the spirit of the 'comedy of cringe' vein which is so in vogue".[2]

Background

Lynch began her career as part of the Irish gay scene where she had the stage name Busty Lycra.[3] She won Miss Alternative Ireland in 1998[4] with a show produced by Warren Meyler from County Wexford.[3][5][6][7] Music manager and judge on The X Factor, Louis Walsh was on the judging panel.[4]

Meyler and Lynch adapted their characters for television and produced three shows; Katherine Lynch's Working Girls, Katherine Lynch's Wonderwomen and An Audience with Katherine Lynch.[5] Her shows have a strong following in the Irish gay scene due to her background.[5]

Katherine Lynch's Working Girls was the comedienne's first television series.[6] The three-part series was broadcast on RTÉ Two on Tuesday nights in January 2008.[1] The series featured three of Lynch's characters; Singin' Bernie Walsh, Sheila Sheik and Busty Lycra.[1]

Characters

The show features three characters over its three episodes. According to the RTÉ Guide, Bernie Walsh, another of Lynch's creations, is her favourite character.[1] Walsh is a country and western singer with an album, Friends in Hi Aces, featuring songs such as "Start Packin' the Van (Dundalk, Dundalk)", "My Van" and "Stand By Your Van", to sell.[1] The character has even performed on The Late Late Show.[4] Sheila Sheik is a female bellydancer from Tallaght, County Dublin, with an Egyptian husband.[1] The third character featured in Working Girls is a resurrected version of eighty-foot supermodel Busty Lycra, portrayed as a foot fetish model and porn star from Northern Ireland who returns from Los Angeles when her career is destroyed by a verucca in her own foot.[1][3] When Lynch walked down Dublin's Thomas Street in the guise of Busty Lycra, she was stopped on many occasions by people asking for her identity, with some people believing she was Adele King.[1] Lycra featured in Working Girls but was removed from the follow-up series Wonderwomen amidst concerns about perceived rudeness expressed by RTÉ.[3]
